HRRN WINS MEDIA ECLIPSE AWARD FOR BROADCAST OF 2022 BREEDERS’ CUP CLASSIC
Network to be honored with third Audio/Multimedia Eclipse Award
LEXINGTON, KY (January 6, 2023) – The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters (NTWAB) today announced Horse Racing Radio Network (HRRN) will receive the Eclipse Award in the Audio/Multimedia category for the network’s coverage of the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Classic hosted live from Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, KY. This is the third Eclipse Award for HRRN which previously won for their broadcast of the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2010 and 2019.
HRRN President Mike Penna anchored the coverage alongside analysts Bobby Neuman, Jude Feld, and Jeff Bloom with Keeneland announcer Kurt Becker providing the live call of Flightline’s historic victory. Lee Dellapina and engineer Shawn Seay produced the broadcast, with production assistance contributed by Justin Taylor, Keith O’Brien, Jude Feld, Fanny Salmon and Michelle Penna.
“To be honored with a third Eclipse Award is extremely special,” said Penna. “When we launched HRRN nearly 20 years ago, our only goal was to create something that would help the sport in some way. Thanks to the support of our sponsors, our listeners, and everyone who has ever taken time to join us as a guest on our shows, we have been able to continue to tell the stories which make our sport great. We are truly grateful and humbled to be recognized once again.”
HRRN’s coverage, presented by 2017 Classic winner Gun Runner, included a vignette featuring Flightline’s co-owner and breeder Jane Lyon of Summer Wind Farm documenting his journey from foal to superstar. Penna, Neuman and Feld also spent time discussing the accomplishments of Flightline’s rivals in the lead up to the race and noted the significance of the race in potentially determining the champion in the three-year-old division. Following the race, Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez who was aboard Happy Saver, joined Jeff Bloom to share his thoughts on Flightline and what it was like competing against him.
“While Flightline was the primary storyline associated with the Classic, it was important not to neglect his talented rivals and the storylines they presented,” said Penna.
The winners will be presented their trophies at the 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards dinner and ceremony, which will be held on Thursday, January 26, at The Breakers in Palm Beach, FL.
